STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE WELSH KENNEL CLUB 14

This was the first time I had awarded CCs to Staffordshire Bull Terriers in the UK despite having first judged the breed at open show level 43 years ago!
I would like to thank the exhibitors for the very sporting way in which they received my decisions. I thought there were some strong classes. By and large I thought that heads were good with the correct width of skull, good stop and head depth and fill under the eye.
Exhibits were mostly shown in really good condition and were well muscled. Temperaments were very good in general. I did however feel that it was difficult in some classes to find exhibits which not only had truly good heads but which also moved well up and down in a reasonably disciplined way and also maintained their outlines well while on the move around the ring. I was however pleased with the top winners.
I found three dogs with unsatisfactory canines and one making heavy weather of its breathing. In some senior bitch classes I thought that some had heads that were just a bit overdone and as a result were doggy looking.
I was also disappointed by the number of light eyes even in dark coloured exhibits and this does rather spoil expressions.

Thanks again to exhibitors for their entries and for their sporting attitude.

VD (1, 0) 1. Martinez Int Ch Black Gold De Los Del Esla, very pleasing in head and skull and good eyes, OK in front with a good neck. Correct in rib and good body shape with correctly carried tail. Could have moved a shade better behind. Shown in excellent condition.

MPD (3, 0) 1. Hawken s Carfury Bal Dhu, OK in ears, good skull and enough stop. Moved out pretty well and used tail well. Enough bone for age. OK for proportions. Well muscled and shown in really good condition.

2. Hirst & Bibby s Taraiel Busta Rhymes, good in skull but not yet as strong under the eyes as the winner. Could have a shade more strength of front but still very young. Correct feet. Could carry tail better but scored in showmanship over 3 which sadly just would not behave properly and needs a bit more ring training.

3. Bibby s Taraiel Tinie Tempah

PD (3, 0) 1. Karlsson & Beaufoy s Jewelstaff Rocker Billy Boy, head developing well and scored overall for maturity here. Good skull and will develop more in foreface with time, good in front without being too heavy there for age. Moved around the ring well. Enough bone and good strong feet of the correct shape. Good neck and topline and correct tail carriage. Enough bend of stifle. Went on to be Best Puppy in Breed.

2. Freeman & Davies Samtan Simba's Legacy, rather well developed in head for age but scored there over 3, moved slightly irregularly and was a bit heavy over the shoulder. Good body outline and better in topline and tailset than 3.

3. Lewis Kentstars Apollo.

JD (8, 1)

Some dogs could have behaved better here.

1. Martinez Bullbrothers Dr Who, a very fit dog with an excellent skull, good cheek muscles and good round eyes. Needs just a shade more strength of foreface to complete the picture but that will surely come with time. Enough neck and good outline and rib. OK in front without being overdone there. Moved up and down the ring extremely well. Well muscled behind and well let down in hocks.

2. Lavington s Caymenstaffs One in a Milion, another pleasing dog with a strong front, very good in head and moved better than 3 which was not behaving all that well in the way up and down the ring. Correct amount of stop. Good spring of rib. Good bone.

3. Blacker s Bullrichs Bismarck At Crossguns

YD (3, 0)

1. Higgins Acrestaf O'Grady, a very strong headed dog that moved out pretty well though he was inclined to get his head down on the ground too much. Good wide skull and correct stop with correct head to muzzle proportions and plenty of cheek muscle. Moved out and back well and OK in topline. OK in underline and had a good outline when he used it.

2.McClements Stormfire Billy Boy at Jodanzac (Imp), a red dog with a good skull, could have a shade more strength of foreface. Moved across the ring well. OK in front but just a shade heavy in shoulder. Good rib and well muscled behind. Scored over 3 for dentition.3. Gardner s Labrastaf Curious George

ND (2, 0)

1. Samtan Simba's Legacy.

2. Martinez Bullbrothers Fifth Element, slightly finer for type and could be stronger in front. Good body shape and proportions. Needs just a shade more strength of foreface and could be better in set on of tail. .

GD (3, 1)

1. Samtan Simba's Legacy.

2. Cope s Eclypstaff Fast N Furious, a good dog that could perhaps be better in topline. Very strong head and skull with correct muzzle. Good rib and OK in front. Plenty of muscle behind but fell away over the loin and never really got into his stride properly.

PGD (3, 0)

1. Cockings & Lopez Welshstaff Abracadabra, not over exaggerated but not a small dog. Stronger in foreface and under the eye than 2. Just a bit lippy but really good in skull and cheek muscles. OK in front and moved pretty well. Could do with a shade more bone to balance size. A smart dog with a good head.

2. McKimm s Fergiestaffs Olympic Flame, moved well, scored over 3 for shoulder and movement. Needs a bit more strength of foreface but good in breadth of skull. Moved well but did not behave well at all times.

3. Payton s Tonpay Barmy Army JW

LD (8, 1)

1. Ryan s Rubericla Black Starscream, very strong headed dog with a pleasing skull, good breadth and enough depth, not overdone in front but correct there and moved out well there. A shade pinned in hocks behind but excellent neck, correct spring of rib and good in loin. Well muscled and held his shape well on the way round the ring.

2. Beeby & Watson s Geordiestaff Dynamo Dexter JW, again pleasing in head. A shade heavy over the shoulder, scored in hind movement over 3 which was a shade close behind. Good skull shape, eyes seemed a shade close. Good in body and correct in topline.

3. Hall s Geordiestaff Canny Laddie JW.

OD (14, 2)

This was a very strong class.

1. Kimber s Kimstaff's Harry Potter, good in skull, stop and foreface with the right proportions, OK in eye and not over exaggerated. Moved up and back very well. Good in both topline and underline and enough neck. Good rib and correct body proportions. Held topline well on the move going around the ring. Shown in excellent condition and muscle. It was his body shape, agility and movement that carried him through here today for me. Went on to win DCC and BOB.

2. Membury s Mitzstaff Fun to Flex, a shade stronger in head and bone. Though he moved acceptably, he didn t move with quite the style of the winner. Very good in bone, good head, skull and expression. Not quite so good in feet and pasterns as the winner but very well muscled indeed behind, and good in outline and proportions. Res DCC

3. Llewellyn s Sikaistaff the Dark Knight ShCM

VB (2, 0)

1. Hirst & Bibby s Ch Taraiel Trinity Sh.CM, moved a whole lot better than 2 here. Good in skull and muzzle planes. OK in front and well balanced throughout. Enough bone and enough spring of rib. Correct in stifles without being overdone there and had plenty of muscle.

2. Fletcher & Seedhouse s Granitangel Solar Flare, good broad skull with plenty of cheek muscle. Would have preferred better eyerim pigment. A shade wide in front and could have moved better behind. Plenty of muscle and enough depth of brisket.

MPB (4, 0)

This was not an easy class to judge. Heads here needed time to develop and some did not show all that well.

1. Mee & Hale s Pridesdale Spanish Delight, needs time to develop in underjaw. Not too much body for age and moved out well, Good bone and enough spring of rib and depth of chest for age. Tail carried OK.

2. Woollett s Assilio Red Contessa, stood well but was a bit unruly on the move. OK skull but eyes could be rounder. Showed better than 3.

3. Hirst & Bibby s Taraiel Lorde

PB (1, 0)

1. McClements Jodanzac Brindle Pride, stood alone. Strong in head for age. Plenty of breadth of skull and plenty of cheek muscle. Good rib and good in shoulder with good bone and feet. Moved out and back OK..

JB. (6, 1)

A close decision here between the first two

1. Wilks Mishdar's Special Order for Jevaces, this one scored in eye colour over 2. Good head and expression, pleasing level topline. OK in body proportions and good underline without too much tuck up. Good in shoulder and moved well in front and behind. Enough bone for a bitch of her age. Good tail well carried. Scored for type and outline.

2. Wall & Webb s Manark Sophie's Legacy, another really good bitch. Though she was good in shoulder she was not at times quite so positive in front standing as 1. Good in head proportions with enough stop. Good depth of brisket and correct in bend of stifle without exaggeration

3. Rogers Berrystock Charlies Angel

1. Ryan s Rubericla Little Bumblebee, for me stood out here for body, head and proportions but did not move all that well behind. Very good in head and foreface with good cheek muscle. Scored in fill under the eye and tail carriage over 2. Good body with enough depth and good bone.

2. Beaufoys Lackyle Realta Beag of Wyrefare, another pleasing one moved better behind than winner but needed a shade more strength of muzzle to complete the picture and could be better in set on of tail. Good skull and stop, good neck. Enough bend of stifle and well muscled all round.

3. Smith s Estellastaff Birthday Girl Pennsmith

LB (11, 2)

1. Byrne, Wall & Webb s Manark Maggie May. I thought a very pleasing bitch in this class. Seemed very good in head to me with good skull, stop and foreface and good underjaw. Not overdone in head. (Some bitches here and in the Open class seemed to me to be just a shade overdone and doggy in head.) Eyes could be rounder. Good in outline and topline. Good front and good feet. Shown in very fit condition. Good tailset and carriage. Not overdone in hindquarters and moved across the ring well.

2. Mignano-Fricker & Fricker s Pantycelyn Just a Dream of Calavey, another one with a good strong head. Just a little bit lighter in eye than I would have preferred. But good depth of head. OK in front and moved out well. Very well muscled and ribs good and carried well back.

3. Butler s Seenworstaff Storm Warning at Joemikeste JW

OB (9, 2)

Three very good bitches.

1. Hirst & Bibby s Ch Taraiel Ciara JW Sh.CM, I thought this one scored for outline and for balance of head to body and to bone. She was good in head for a bitch with enough depth and strength and underjaw. When she really gets going she moves extremely well both in front and behind and retains her topline and outline in profile well when moving around the ring. She was slightly less heavy in front than 2. Good in bone, pasterns and feet. Just the right amount of neck and had a great deal of type and quality without being over exaggerated in any way. That s what is meant by balance! Could be better in eye. Went in to win the Bitch CC.

2. Winwood & Tunnah s Cursus Summer Storm JW, another very pleasing bitch with an excellent skull with enough breadth. Good cheek muscles. Scored in head over 3 which I also liked. Good topline, enough bone. Good underline and enough bend of stifle. She too held her topline well on the way around the ring. She was just a shade heavier over the shoulder than the winner. Went on to win Bitch Res CC.

3. Funnell s Ch Kewaunee Pocahontas for Powerpack JW
