STAFFORDSHIRE BULL JUDGE WELSH KENNEL CLUB 16

Staffordshire Bull Terriers

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Welsh Kennel Club for their invitation to judge Staffordshire Bull Terriers at their 2016 Ch show. Their hospitality was wonderful & I was made to feel very welcome. My heartfelt thanks goes to my two stewards, Karen & Martin Johnson who made everything run so smoothly for me that I was able to get on with the job in hand.

It has been a while since I was in the show ring which in many ways made my day even more special. I simply had no idea who the majority of the dogs were so it made my task very interesting. I do have several observations to make about the breed in general, remember this is only my observation.

I think we are in danger of losing the blend of Bull & Terrier, which would be a crying shame, there were a lot of finer animals on show, some outstanding, but as a judge you are supposed to judge to a Standard, allowing for personal interpretation. Mouths have not been mentioned in my critique. There were a few faults, misplaced teeth, level bites etc., just niggly faults, something to think about if you are intending to do some breeding. Condition, when entry fees are so high, I simply cannot understand why some exhibitors do not put more work into the condition of their dogs, I found several nice animals that were so soft to the touch, what a crying shame you lost out, & some I am afraid needing a good bath. Temperament as you would expect was exemplary. I have not mentioned individual movement in my critique, as it goes without saying if a dog gets placed it obviously has to move as a Stafford should. Observations over, thank you to everyone who entered under me, I had such a special day one I will remember for a very long time, with some lovely dogs to go over. The atmosphere around the ring seemed very good & my decisions were well received. Little did I realise when I judged my very first dog show in 2000, I would one day be in this very honoured position. Special moments for me were my DCC winner becoming a Ch, & the BP winning the Terrier Puppy group, well done. So now on to individual critiques of my classes.

VD (1)

1 Haywood’s Ozzie The Enforcer, a lovely way to start the day with, a red 8 years dog. A super blend of bull & terrier, nice head, with a typical Stafford expression. He scored well in his overall body construction, possessing ample bone, presented in nice condition all rounded off with a pump handled tail. A nice dog & although he stood alone a worthy winner, just lost out to the veteran bitch for BV by a whisker.

MPD (2)

1 Jones’ Rougestaff The Lone Ranger, an eyecatching 8 months r/w puppy. What drew me to him was his soundness of construction, a great blend of Bull & terrier. His head has plenty of maturing to do, his body has everything in the right place for a baby. He has a good level topline, good feet, nice angulation at the backend, with a gleaming coat. I am sure his owner will have lots of fun with him as he grows up. He scored over the second place puppy, who was of a totally different type, by virtue of a better overall shape with a better topline;

2 Breckell’s Chiswelstaff Lets Dance, 7 months b/br baby. This young man had a beautiful typical head, in fact it was better than the first placed dog. He is well off for bone, possessing all the attributes that nice puppy should have, dark eye, good front, nice coat etc. I just felt that because he is very short coupled, it affected his topline & made him look slightly over angulated at this stage in his development. Puppies change enormously as they mature & I am sure everything will settle. Another day the placings could be reversed. I wish both of you all the best for future.

PD (3,2a)

1 Darby’s Manark Guns N Roses, this pup stood alone. What an eyecatcher top size b/br at 11 months. He certainly had my attention. I hope he does not grow any taller. What a stunner, classic head shape, great expression, ample bone, nicely developed body for his age. Confident movement for a youngster. It would have taken an exceptional puppy to beat him. He was my BP & I was delighted to see that he won the Terrier Puppy Group, huge congratulations & all the very best for the future, I shall watch with great interest.

JD (4)

1 Mayren’s Bellarouge Adonis at Fergiestaffs, my actual words were, wow. This dog is a real eyecatching r/w pied of 17 months with terrific ring presence. This boy has the best of classic head shape with super dark eyes. Clean muzzle, good underjaw, clean & correct front, Good feet, correct body proportions, good movement, & although his tail carriage was a bit high it was lost in the overall picture. He scored over the second placed dog, who probably possess the best body shape I have ever seen on a Stafford, on his obvious maturity. I was delighted to award him a RCC, good luck for the future;

2 Hirst & Bibby’s Tariel Darth Vader, this kennel produces consistently good Staffords for which I congratulate them. This youngster of 17 months has, as I mentioned, probably the best body construction I have ever seen on a Stafford. His head has yet to fully mature, they all mature at different rates & he certainly has time on his side. He ticked all the boxes, in blend & bone. So very sound & so well put together. Front needs to tighten up. Good luck for the future. He was unlucky to meet the winner today, but given time I am sure he will make his mark;

3 Jones’ Maxsta Prince Of Celts.

YD (5)

1 Winwood & Tunnah’s Nerototo Dark Element, very balanced dark brindle Stafford, a true blend of bull & terrier, this young man has so much going for him, darkest of eyes, neat & expressive ears, balanced head, strong jaw, feet need to tighten, certainly the fittest in the class, who will only get better with age. Lovely lad. He won this class by virtue of his ring presence over another nice dog;

2 Row & South’s Illori Akiniana, b/br with deceptive white markings on the front, which can draw your eye away from his good front, well off for bone, nice feet. Head shape good, possessing a good strong underjaw. Overall a nice dog to go over, well balanced nice angulation at the rear. Unlucky to meet the winner today, sure he will do well with a bit of time. Two nice dogs;

3 Johnson’s Shine On My Crazy Diamond at Nikkylestaff.

ND (4)

1 Turner & Neale’s Tegumen Shadow Of A Saint, lovely sized strong headed dark eyed dog who was the only unseen dog in this class. Of lovely size & construction. A bit of a cheeky lad, but a lot going for him. He made his handler work for it on occasions & he won this class by virtue of his overall balance. He had all the attributes you look for, in his head shape, bone & rear end etc.;

2 M Gun N Roses, this handsome boy won puppy but just lost out to a more mature dog at this stage;

3 Brady’s Foylegarth Hakuna Matata.

GD (4,1)

1 Partington’s Manark Bronze Star, this dog was Res in Junior. Standard sized b/br dog with a lovely expression, which attracted me to him across the ring in this class. Strong headed, dark eye, good ears etc. If this dog was fitter he would in my opinion make his mark. He has so many attributes, his size, plenty of bone, he would, I think be worth the extra work & conditioning;

2 Darby’s Goddstaff Bullet Power, my apologies here for some reason my recorder went on temporary strike, however looking at the photograph of him I can see a nice balanced dog with an immaculate white front. I seem to remember him being of standard size with a nice proportioned body, perhaps slightly straight in the stifle, but this did not affect his movement at all. A decent dog;

3 Rees’ Edgeworth Arturo.

PGD (8,2)

1 Rowbotham’s Elitebull Black And Brass, now we are getting somewhere, a very eyecatching b/br dog, presented in excellent condition. Best of head shapes, bang on front, super feet nicely proportioned body with a nice bend of stifle. Please be careful not to over stretch him as it could just affect his lovely outline. He was a fairly comfortable winner of this class by virtue of his obvious class. In time with maturity I am confident he will be knocking on the door. Good luck with him;

2 Davies’ Ginstean Man Of God, looking at my photograph of him & listening to my notes I said standard lad possessing all the virtues I was looking for, perhaps would benefit from being a bit fitter to really show him off. He has a good head shape. His expression did not quite match the winner, well off for bone, correct front & body proportions, tad straight behind, a nice dog, worthy of his place;

3 McDermott’s Macardermus Midnight Caller.

LD (10)

1 Grove’s Manark Murphey’s Law, enter the star of the show in my opinion, as soon as he entered the ring he had my attention, & when I went over him I was not at all disappointed. What a beautiful head & expression, just dared me not to look at him & take note! A fairly big dog but so balanced, bang on front, short coupled, ample rib & super backend, beautifully handled & for me no doubt he was my class winner. He stood out in the final line up so I was so pleased to award him the CC, which I subsequently found out (I think the roar around the ring should have given it away) that this made him the breed’s latest Ch. Many, many congratulations he is a cracker. Definitely one I would love to have at home;

2 Lewis’ Kentstars Apollo, I always feel sorry for good dogs that come up against a real cracker as it was in this case. A smaller dog that the winner but with some much to like about him, lovely head & neat ears, nice front & feet, super back end, he won his place by virtue of being more soundly constructed that the third dog, a nice boy;

3 Whitley’s Ginstean Black Bomber.

OD (9,1)

1 Butler’s Ch Ramblestaff Cos I Could, how nice to have a worthy Ch to go over. It is easy to see why this lovely dog gained his title. B/br dog with a white chest, possessing a fabulous expression & the neatest of ears, gleaming coat, ample bone with a well proportioned body, & totally at one with his handler, I must confess I have seen him fitter, & I was very taken by his singing in the class line-up! A lovely lad & thank you for bringing him under me;

2 Hedges & Mcbride’s Brohez Rubin Hurricaine, really like this dog a lot & what you see is what you get, he is not the flashiest of b/br but fits the Standard to a glove, beautiful shaped head with a lovely alert expression. Correct front & backend, he too could perhaps benefit from an exercise regime, as in my opinion he would be worth it, so standard;

3 Hirst & Bibby’s Taraiel Busta Rhymes.

So now on to the girls, thoroughly enjoyed judging the dogs, found some lovely specimens.

VB (4,1)

1 Hall’s Rekrahstaff Miss Attitude cum Geordiestaff, OK, it is confession time, one look at this very dignified grey muzzled old lady & my heart melted. Still maintaining her shape at 9 years, in good condition & clearly loving her day out, & although I have not mentioned movement in my other critiques, I have judged her before & commented on it then, & I will reiterate, she floated round the ring maintaining shape, outline & propulsion. She won this class over a classy Ch bitch on her overall shape & performance. Was pleased to award her BV, well done;

2 Funnell’s Ch Kewaunee Pocahontas for Powerpack, great to see a Ch bitch still strutting her stuff in Veteran. Of nice size & balance this 9 years b/br, has maintained all her shape & outline. She still has the virtues she possessed in her prime, being of standard size, good front & well off for bone. It was a shame she came up against the winner today, but thank you for allowing me to judge her;

3 Gardner’s Labrastaf Eye Of The Storm.

MPB (3)

So back to the beginning with the babies, three promising youngsters.

1 Cockings’ Azyal’staff Lara Croft, b/br. Very nice youngster this one, loads of potential, loved her overall outline, pretty feminine expression, lovely head for her age. At 7 plus months this girl has a lot going for her, everything is in the right place & I shall watch her progress with great interest, I predict a good show career here. She won by virtue of her overall balance;

2 Norton’s Tikkurilan Spot On, loved this young lady’s colouring, so nice to see a rich mahogany brindle. Sweet puppy here, a real raw little individual at this stage, with a lot of potential, nice shape & size, took it all in her stride, should have a good future, unlucky to meet the winner today;

3 Roger’s Ginsean Second Chance for Ynsstaff.

PB (8,2)

1 Yates, Tune & Cund’s Tusslestaff Black Diamond, just when I was thinking about the puppies in the previous class in comes this little black star. The rawest of puppies but she just screamed class & potential at me. She is on the small side & I hope she grows on a bit more, however, super little package, great outline, best of heads (loads to come), nice bit of lift, shorter coupled, . She did well to outshine some more mature girls in this class but she did. She was so well handled to win this class & BPB, but lost out to an obviously more advanced puppy dog. Good luck for the future. She won this class by virtue of her obvious class, & balance;

2 Scotland’s Callastaff Moon River, a much stronger young lady than the winner, but hey they all grow at different rates. Lots to like about her, so well put together for her age, stronger head, short coupled. Good feet, lovely head & expression & I feel sure that she will grow into a real nice bitch, Unfortunate to meet 1 today. Very much at one with her handler;

3 Funnell’s Powerpack Cherokee.

JB (7,1)

1 Byrne & Gartland’s Carandstaff Moondance, loved her the moment I saw her. A b/br bitch who is a proper blend of bull & terrier with a beautiful head shape, strong underjaw, & round dark eye. Short coupled, of good substance, bang on front, & has huge potential, I think, given time & her maturity. I did look at her in the final line-up for RCC, but felt she needed a bit more maturity. Lovely girl, thank you for bringing her. She won this class by virtue of her being a more complete package at this stage;

2 Thorley & Robert’s Tegumen Vanity Kills, there was a lot I liked about this young lady, well up on the leg at this stage, with a lovely head shape, & front. Lovely tight feet, her body at this still has to catch up with her height in maturity, but hopefully in time this will all settle down & a super bitch will emerge;

3 Boulton’s Nizeva Va Nessa.

YB (6)

1 Winwood & Tunnah’s Nerotoro Stella, confession time, at the very few shows I have been to in the last year, I have noticed this bitch & thought she looked a tidy individual. Well, when she appeared in this class I was immediately drawn to her by her wonderful ring presence. When she stood before me, I was totally blown away, a superb blend of bull & terrier fabulous head shape, great underjaw, darkest of eyes, & super ears. Correct front, flowing into a balanced body, great backend, (though please be careful not to overstretch her), & correct tail. Overall a super, super bitch & it was with enormous pleasure that I awarded her, her first CC, so well deserved. Well done, I am sure the other two will come. She lost out on BOB by a whisker;

2 Johnson’s Ginstean My Girl Lollipop at Nikkylstaff, another b/br bitch of standard size. Very pretty, lovely size & bone, lovely head, with good underjaw, dark ears & great ears. Sound balanced construction, super tail carriage, & good feet. There is still I feel more to come to complete the picture, & she was unfortunate to come up against an outstanding bitch;

3 Mann’s Nerotoro Cosmic Girl.

NB (3,2)

1 Ford & Williams’ Dajast Sweety with Jam’n Loz, this young lady was Res in the puppy class. Lovely headed little girl, nice brindle colour, dark eye which looked straight at me, nice bodied just need to mature, but plenty of time on her side.

GB (3,2)

1 P Cherokee, third in a good puppy class, this young lady has lots to like, looking at the photograph she is very much the raw recruit. Nice shape, & size with sweet little head with lots more still to come. I did like her overall balance, & I am sure she will grow into a nice bitch.

PGB (5)

1 Woollet’s Ailio Red Contessa, I actually found this class quite a hard one. However, this red bitch ticked a lot of the boxes. She is well within the Standard, having a nice head, with a great round eye. Body construction good, though perhaps a tad straight behind. I particularly noticed her tight feet with lovely dark nails. She did at times seem slightly disinterested with her surroundings, but she showed me enough to win this class. I was somewhat disappointed that she did not stay for the line-up. She won her class by being better balanced than the second;

2 MacDermott’s Macadermus Dawn Run, very standard sized black brindle bitch, with a good head, dark eye & good ears. Her body construction was in proportion to her height, but she tried her hardest to hide her good qualities by leaning into her collar most of the time. I think her feet could be a bit tighter, & she would benefit from being a bit fitter. However, she deserved her second place;

3 Thisby’s Samtan Black Pearl at Taurinstaff.

LB (13,2)

1 Quigley’s Rapstaff Wheeler Dealer at Cilledoire, some real quality about this b/br bitch. Beautiful headed bitch, with lovely round dark eye, correct set ears slightly bigger than some, but correctly set, & they certainly did not detract from her in any way. Bang on front, with lovely tight feet. Body construction good, nice tuck flowing into a good backend. I do feel that there is still more maturing to come which I think will give her that extra something that is needed to take her to the next level. However, she won this class by virtue of her many good qualities. Well done;

2 Lewis’ Macerdermus Mryna Queen at Inkastaff, apologies first of all to the handler of this bitch. It took me several attempts to record this critique properly, put it down to finger fatigue! Anyway, very standard sized b/br bitch with a super head shape, very clean, lovely dark eye & little ears. This all flows into a nice shaped body. Some things about her I preferred to the winner, particularly the strength in her backend, please don’t overstretch her, as it does detract from her overall quality. Her feet just need to be a bit tighter. Close decision. Well done;

3 Hirst & Bibby’s Taraiel Lorde.

OB (13,2)

1 Mason’s Dare To Dream, what a dream of a class, to be presented with so many quality girls was a real honour. Some tough decisions. I had some real surprises too. I had no idea who my winner was until the end. What a little beauty, best of head shapes darkest of eyes, great front correctly flowing into a beautifully proportioned body. She is the consummate show girl, commanded the ring & rightly won this class. I have followed many really experienced judges in judging this girl, & can fully understand why she has achieved all that she has, I feel very honoured to have judged her. Thank you for bringing her. My only observation, for me personally I just wish there was a bit more of her all over. She thoroughly deserved her RCC. Well done;

2 Roger’s Ch Berrystock Charlie’s Angel, a totally different style of bitch to the winner. She had the best of head shapes, darkest of eyes, strength of underjaw, clean lipped, all flowing into a nice strong compact body. Full credit to her owner, she was by far the fittest bitch on the day, such strength in her hams, offset by a lovely pump handle tail. Personally I would like just a little bit more lift to complete the picture, but I can see why she done so much winning, she is a truly standard bitch, & a very worthy Ch. My opinion today was just how I saw her. I know she will carry on winning at the top level, but the winner today just had something about her. Thank you for bringing her under me;

3 Terzi’s Unistar at Maxtaffy Bee Master.
