WEST HIGHLAND WHITE JUDGE NATIONAL TERRIER 19

I must start by apologising to all concerned as I am not able to provide a full critique due my finding after the event that my voice recorder only held a s effort to note the good points as well as the bad when dictating my critiques whereas my days later memory tends to focus more on the faults, therefore I do not think it would be right for me to attempt a full critique from memory alone. Consequently I am only commenting on my main winners and making some general observations. I found myself pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of the entry, particularly given all our concerns about the ever diminishing numbers, but then of course maybe exhibitors know my preferences all too well by now. That said there were the exceptions and I was surprised to find that two exhibits I knew to have done well had poorly let down hocks. I was impressed with the texture and density of coats, and the fore and aft movement overall. I would also mention that, for all that in the end neither my CC nor RCC winners came from it, the limit bitch class was exceptionally even in quality and, forgive the cliché, any of them could have been the winner on another day. My biggest bugbear was the number of exhibits with too much hair taken away around the eyes. It's not the dogs' fault and I know there are pressures to make it more obvious that they can see out but it seemed as if at least half of the dogs present needed to have such trimming done much more judiciously. For me it creates an alien look that is most disconcerting however much having felt at the brows, looked at the eye shape and gained the dogs attention told me that it was only cosmetic. DCC & BOB - Berry's Karamynd Star Player With Ashgate, not a dog I was aware of, despite this turning out to be his crowning award, but I was immediately aware of him when he entered the ring. Examination didn't disappoint and I was particularly enamoured with his strong male head and front and rear assemblage. Add in that he kept a level topline and tail bang on top while driving round the ring and he couldn't be denied. RDCC - Corri's Inverglen Master Mariner. Cobbier type who is maturing nicely and was presented in a lovely jacket. Maybe not quite the ring presence of the winner but otherwise virtually the same comments apply. BCC - Griffiths' Ch Karamynd Guilded Lily. It's no secret that I like this kennel's type, and I have admired this girl in particular from ringside, therefore it was good to find she fulfilled my expectations on closer examination. She has everything I want to see except that she exhibits a common behavioural trait of this kennel in that she leans to the side when being moved out and back. It's something I can forgive in most instances however it did come into play in my decision on the final challenge. RBCC - Steemson's Bocans News Flash. Again not one I've been aware of but one who had to be good even to win what was an unusually strong post grad, a class that is often a bit of a mishmash of developmental stages and quality. Beautifully presented with a strong but still feminine head plus all the other attributes I want, I can only surmise that my lack of awareness was down to her coming into her best at just on 2 years old. BP - Burns & Burns' Burneze Maid To Order. What can I say but that at just under 12 months and with this kennel's consistent type and exemplary presentation this stunning girl is already the finished product. BPD - Bradbury's Fourastay Fontay. Loved this 6 month old, and his litter sisters, so young but so much potential. He has the excellent foundations to build upon of good feet, straight front, level topline, a powerful rear end and a hard coat with an excellent eye and neat ears. I could probably have guessed their sire from the trios' tendency to look better when not being topped and tailed.
