THE KERRY BLUE TERRIER CUB OF ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW
27/06/2019
Thank you to the KBTCE for the invitation to judge their Championship Show in thee Club’s 97th year.  It was an honour and a pleasure to have the opportunity to go over my original, and still favourite, breed.  Many thanks too to my very efficient Stewards, Lyndia and Tony Salmon, who kept the whole process running without a hitch.
In general I found much to admire but there were two areas of concern.  The first was the apparent confusion between  “short coupled” and  “short backed”. Nowhere in the standard does it mention short backed but short coupling is a requirement. I found several Kerries  with short backs  caused by short rib cages and in most cases longer coupling.  This resulted in short stepping movement or, when  combined with over angulation, the  impression of riding a bicycle at the rear.  In either case it creates inefficient movement, not to mention the limit to the heart and lung room needed for a days work.  The second concern was the appearance of several incorrect or untidy bites.  This used to be very unusual in Kerries and needs attention.

Vet D

1. Somers’ Dogazza Rhythm and Blues Stood alone but thoroughly deserved his place.  9 years old.  Balanced head on strong neck running into well laid shoulder.  Well ribbed back and short coupled giving level topline.  Well angulated at both end with hard muscular quarters giving free movement all round.

LD

1. Hetherington’s Newent Soul Man.  A very well constructed dog in all departments.  From his balanced head to his powerful rear everything is in the right place.  He is unexaggerated as the standard demands and his movement is powerful and sound.  Coat texture is good and the colour is coming through well and as a two year old there is time for it to clear. CC and BIS

2. Walters’ Kebulak Blue Faced Lie Kamaghan   Another very good dog with a good coat and colour. Long well balanced head and good bite.  Good topline and tailset and moved out well.  Just preferred the shoulder and coupling of the first.

OD

1. Cyres Adonis.   Long balanced head with well placed ears and typical Kerry expression.  Well laid shoulder and well ribbed back giving strong level topline.  Well set tail with plenty behind it.  Good rear angulation.  A bit erratic on the move but took enough straight steps in each direction to show he really can move. RCC

2.  Davani’s Kebulak Wear My Kiss.  Good head, bite and expression. Well angulated front and rear.  Level topline held on the move and good coat and colour. Very close up but just preferred the substance of the first.

3. McCann’s Ballyblue The Minstrel

Vet B

1.Rafter’s  Arkama My Way. 8 year old with a lean balanced head and small neat ears tending to fly as many ears do with age. Good reach of neck. Well laid shoulder and good topline.  Very pretty and feminine with a  nice  coloured coat.  Moved well.

MPB

1. O’Rourke’s Kebulak Desire On Fire.  Very pretty feminine pup just 6 months old.  Lean head with excellent bite and typical expression.  Good layback and rear angulation.  Well ribbed back and short coupled.  Silky coat and moved well for one so young.  Will watch her progress with interest. BP

PB

1. Howard’s Kebulak Good Girl Gone Bad.   Feminine and attractive.  Good head neck and shoulder, level topline and good tailset. Well angulated front and rear.  Silky coat but to be picky would have liked to see some wave.  Moved out well.

2.  Rafter’s Talula Blue for Rafscos.  Another pretty pup with promise. Good head and expression.  Well laid shoulder and good rear angulation.  Immature compared to the first and a bit narrow all through at the moment but time is on her side.

JB

1. Anderson and Watt’s Irisblu Viola.    14-month youngster Lean balanced head with good bite and dark eye giving typical expression.  Well laid shoulder, level topline and good tailset. Moved with purpose.

PGB

1. Clarke-O’Neill and Butler’s Lemracdream Valyria. Feminine young bitch with a neat balanced head and good bite. Correct angulation front and rear and level topline.  Short coupled with good tailset.  Moved well from all angles.

2. Gallett’s Cyres Aurora Teagarden.  Slightly bigger but similar make and shape. Lean head with typical expression and well laid shoulder and rear angulation. Good coat texture.  Unsettled on the move to start but improved to show herself to advantage.  Just preferred the size of the first.

3. Joalyn Sweet Melody

LB

 1. Somers’ Dogazzas Silver Bullet.  Lovely head with good bite, ears and expression. Reachy neck into excellent shoulders.   Well ribbed back and short coupled. Good bone and substance.  Topline level and held on the move. Straight tail and moved out well. Lovely coat and colour. RCC

 2. Walters’ Kebulak Queen of Mean Kamaghan.  Long, balanced head with good bite and expression.  Decent neck and topline and well set tail.  Correct rear angulation producing powerful movement. Good coat and colour.  Preferred her tail carriage to the first but shoulders and front of the winner won the day for me.

OB

A lovely class of mature bitches.

1.Pinfold’s Cyres Angelique.  Lovely head with good bite, dark eye and well placed ears giving correct expression.  Well laid shoulders, good ribcage and coupling giving a level topline. Well set tail with plenty behind it and correct angles fore and aft leading to powerful movement. CC, BOS & RBIS

2.  Rigney’s Ir Ch Arigna First Lady.  Very feminine with a pretty balanced head, well placed shoulder and level topline. Good angles front and rear.  Lovely texture and colour of coat.  Moved soundly but did not seem to show her usual sparkle.  A bitch I have long admired.

3 Clarke O’Neil’s Ch Lemracdream Against All Odz.
