MANCHESTER JUDGE CRUFTS 15

It’s a great honour to be asked to Judge at Crufts for a second time. Thank you all for a good entry of quality specimens of the breed. I found it very enjoyable judging this wonderful breed. Crufts is the showcase for dogs and I am a stickler for temperament, condition and presentation. All dogs need to be thoroughly prepared for a show by their owners, not just a quick bath and a nail trim, but thoughtful quality breeding and long term conditioning. This is how you win the top awards at this level of dog shows. I thought that today the dog classes were stronger in depth than the bitches. Some bitches were marked down having a lighter tan and over wide vents, this is something which usually goes together and not to standard. I was appalled to find that some exhibitors actually presented their charges to me with dirty teeth. I find this totally unacceptable and they paid the price in their placings. All temperaments were excellent ! There were some exceptional exhibits who just missed out on a first place these could change places any time, it made my decisions quite tough in some classes.

Veteran - Dog Entries: 3 Abs: 0

1st WESTWYTCH CALICO CADEAU (MRS F & MS V FITCH & REEVE)
What a cracker for my first class, 11 years old in super condition his perfect teeth put a few of the younger ones to shame. Lovely head, one of the best eye’s of the day for shape and dark colour. Good outline, flowing neck into good shoulders and topline, enough bone, still good markings for his age. Best mover in this class.

2nd INT/MULTI CH TSAR-PING'S NIRI LOKESSON YGDRASIL [ATC AP01701NOR] (MRS E K YSSEN)
Stronger type with plenty of bone and substance, yet still having style and elegance, good for size too, liked his head and eye, but could have used his ears better which would have enhanced his presence.

3rd HAGRID TOBIAS LONGBOTTOM (MRS DOHERTY)
Lovely wedge shaped head and a super eye, well set ears , into flowing neck and correct well balanced outline, he was a little straight in stifle which showed in his movement.

Puppy - Dog Entries: 3 Abs: 0

1st RATTUSTRAP RED ADMIRAL (MR D A LEWIS)
This youngster stood out as he was more mature and better schooled. In excellent condition, good head, a higher ear carriage would have enhanced his presence. Well balanced with enough bone. Could have put a little more effort in, but won the class on his positive movement.

2nd PAUCELIN FALSTER (MR D & MRS A HEBB)
Has a good head but his ears were erratic which didn’t lend itself to a crisp outline. He was a little erratic too. Good deep colour with markings a touch heavy, I do prefer this in a youngster as these should clear as he gets older, just needs to settle down and mature.

3rd MANSIYA IF YOU DARE (MRS E M & MRS S J STEDMAN & LEIGH)
Good for size and conformation, his ears were all over the place which does distract from the balance of the head, only a youngster but his movement was still quite loose. I didn’t like his tail carriage as it spoiled his outline.

Junior – Dog Entries: 4 Abs: 0

1st FELFREE TOP OSCAR (MISS F & MISS C FREER & PRIESTMAN)
Very good for size and well balanced throughout, nice wedge shaped head with correct dark almond shaped eye, good balanced outline nice length of neck into good shoulders, had a super forchest which was well let down for his age. Crabbed a little at first but when he got into his stride he was fine. I would prefer him a pound or two lighter today.

2nd RUSKA-AHON KUKA MUU MUKA [ATC AS00320FIN] (MRS K PAANANEN)
Slightly taller than the winner of the class, my first impression was that his head was slightly small in proportion to the rest of him and ears a little heavy. Plenty of bone and substance and all in proportion he had a lovely top line. Moved really well.

3rd BARLEYDUST HARVEST MOON (MR K J & MRS J S HOUGH)
I loved this dog, Correctly balanced wedge shaped head with well proportioned flat skull, dark almond eye, good forchest. Well balanced and lovely rich colour and markings. I think the big ring put him off as he wasn’t at ease.

Post Graduate – Dog Entries: 6 Abs: 0

1st TALANORS SUPER TREAT (MISS S C WILLIS)
Correct for size and substance well balanced, good wedge shaped head with dark eye, would have liked some more length of neck to bring in a touch more elegance. correct rise over the loin and lovely tail set. Short couples and move positively with drive.

2nd TALANORS SWEET DREAMS (MR G & MRS J M BROWN)
Similar type but slightly taller giving more elegance, better length of neck. Good for head and eye, ears could be a little tighter . Straight front but his feet were a touch flat. Not as compact in movement as first. Perhaps more maturity will tighten him up.

3rd WESTWYTCH BOLT FOR GOLD (MRS A J STAFFORD)
I would have liked just a bit more of this dog, quite nice all over. A very pretty chap with good head if a little fine, elegant good neck and shoulders and rise over loin.

Limit - Dog Entries: 4 Abs: 0

1st MILLACOME MADE IN HEAVEN SHCM (MRS J M & MR N S BUXTON)
What a lovely dog. Really top for size but all in proportion, super head very masculine flat skull and correct wedge shape and plenty of under jaw. Lovely dark eye, ears could be used to advantage. Very good rear angulation which showed in his positive movement. He was knocking on the door today but carrying just a bit too much weight to get the big green card. Res CC

2nd
PAUCELIN ANDONI AT CARAPAST (MISS L & MISS M OLBINSON & KELLY)
Well balanced and fitting the standard, he is in proportion and more of the correct size. Very nice head but needs to be stronger for me, wasn’t using his ears very well. Short and compact body with just enough chest. He moved well and showed very well.

3rd MAGPIEBANK ASH (MR C HARRISON)
Super looking dog in tip top condition, very elegant outline and well balanced. Very nice head and eye although his ears are a little big. Flowing neck into good shoulders. good topline correct tail set albeit his tail is a bit long. He decided to pin in today coming towards me and had to pay the price for that.

1st CH WESTBANK BLUE DIAMOND FOR TALANORS (MR C & MRS G KNIGHT)
The bookies were right today. It easy to praise this dog and difficult to knock, point for point he has a lot to offer. His head is superb, strong good wedge shape both ways, plenty of under jaw dark almond eye and ears to die for. Good shoulders and plenty of chest room, flowing outline and one of the best tail sets. Good rear angulation which gives him plenty of drive. CC & BOB. He did the breed proud in the Terrier group.

2nd CH QUIXOL ALEXANDER (MRS C, MRS C & MRS R DUNFORD, AKRIGG & WALTON)
Another one of my favourites, well up to size whilst keeping a lovely elegant outline. He has a super head, eye and ear carriage, long flowing neck into really good shoulders. Has a correct topline with the rise over the loin in the right place, well balanced and moves really well, I would prefer to see him with just a pound or two more covering.

3rd C I B/FI/SE/RO CH EGLOSHAYLE KING ARTHUR BYJCH FIJW-11 EUW-12 BUW-12 HEW-12 HEW-13 (MRS K TIAINEN)
Good for size with plenty of bone and substance, this one perhaps could do with a pound or two off as it made his neck and shoulders a little stuffy. Alert and showing really well. Good for overall balance and moved ok.

Good Citizen Dog Scheme – Dog Entries: 2 Abs: 0

1st TETANI WIZARD OF DREAMS JW SHCM (MR T & MRS D HEMSELL)
In lovely condition, is good for size and shape, has a nice head, dark almond eye, complimented when he used his ears. Correct rich tan and very good markings. Nice depth of chest and straight front with tuck up. Would benefit from going a little quicker so he could stride out more.

2nd RATTUSTRAP RED ADMIRAL (MR D A LEWIS)
Seen dog, losing his concentration a little.

Veteran - Bitch Entries: 4 Abs: 1

1st TETANI SPIRIT OF THE WIND (MR T & MRS D HEMSELL)
Very good to standard for size and shape, well balanced too. Feminine head with correct wedge shape, dark sparkling eye, ears could have been used to more advantage. Good topline and tailset. Won this class clearly on movement.

2nd TYBURN LAODICE (MRS GERAGHTY)
Standard size again, plenty of body and substance, I did like to see her slight forchest with the depth of chest. Just spoiled her outline with length of neck which made her look a little stuffy.

3rd GLORYLINE LADY JANE GREY (MR P D & MRS J M FORSHAW)
A nice bitch of the type I would go for, showing herself off, lovely head, length of neck and flowing lines, she was a touch lose in her movement today.

Puppy - Bitch Entries: 3 Abs: 0

1st RATTUSTRAP IMPERIAL RED (MISS E A, MR P N & MRS J SAXTON, DALE & EMRICK)
An outstanding well schooled puppy enjoying the day, from the side had a lovely outline and tail set. Super head, eye and ear. Long flowing neck with correct arch at the crest, good shoulders and topline. Straight front, I thought her feet were on the tight side. Excellent turn of stifle. Just needs to mature and tighten up in movement. BP

2nd EGLOSHAYLE QUEEN OF THE MAY (MR D J & MRS J L PALMER)
Another very nice puppy, Great head, eye and ear. Deep tan and good markings. She has just the right amount of bone. Narrow chest and straight well set front with nice feet.Flowing lines with everything in proportion, moved well when she got into her stride. Just needs to concentrate a little more on the showing and will do well.

3rd RATTUSTRAP RED FEATHER (MISS C R & MR J C BEEVERS & SCOTT)
Not disgraced in this class at all. I think the nerves slightly got the better of them today. Nice head and eye, if she had used her ears more it would have complimented her head. Good rich tan, a little heavy on her thumb prints, but this will stand her in good stead as she matures and they clear up. A bit fidgety, so needs a bit more ring practice.

Junior – Bitch Entries: 5 Abs: 0

1st MARLABLUE IN A TWIRL (MISS B R CAWLEY)
I really likes this one, correct for size, beautiful head with lovely eye and ears. Neck tapering into well laid shoulders, straight front set on under the chest. Correct in proportion of length to height. Good for rear angulation and tail set. Richest of tan and dark markings to complement this. Well handled.

2nd MIMBRE BOMBETTE (MS C A WICKER)
Difficult to separate these two as they were of different types. A size up but oozing elegance, Lovely head and flowing lines, straight front and she had that super forchest giving enough heart room. Lovely topline with correctly places rise over the loin and complementing tuck up. Moved well but I have seen her move better than today.

3rd JAZESTRY VOICE OF TRUTH (MRS E M BARTLETT)
Good standard sized bitch, nothing over done, she has plenty of bone and substance whilst keeping her femininity, good head and nice wedge shape, dark eye, enough neck and well laid shoulders. She moved well but looked as though she might have had a phantom which took away her curves.

Post Graduate – Bitch Entries: 10 Abs: 0

1st MIMBRE BOMBETTE (MS C A WICKER)
Seen

2nd EGLOSHAYLE FALLEN ANGEL (MR D J & MRS J L PALMER)
Nice bitch well presented and in good order, Feminine head good length of neck, straight front well set under, enough depth of chest and a good tuck up. Held a good topline on the move and held her tail correctly.

3rd TALANORS SECRET TREAT (MR & MRS L J SYMINGTON)
Not quite giving her all to the handler, Lovely head and compact body she lost a touch of elegance by having a pound or so excess weight. Moved correctly which gave her the place.

Limit - Bitch Entries: 8 Abs: 1

1st QUIXOL SOIREE (MRS C & MRS C DUNFORD & AKRIGG)
To be honest, I thought this was my CC winner as she came into the ring, she caught my eye straight away. Super head, eye and ears, lovely rich tan and good strong clear markings. When going over her and comparing her to the standard it all fell into place, she is a lovely bitch. Just missed the top slot as she was slightly over weight and would insist in messing around. When we are looking for a CC winner to send into the big ring, these things have to be taken into account. Worthy res CC.

2nd FELFREE A TOUCH OF GLAM FOR MANRIO (MR R E PEACHAM)
Another nice bitch of a different type, very feminine, slightly sharper wedge shaped head, very good expression and alert ears. One of the best crest of necks today, good shoulders and straight front. Slightly longer in back but bitches can get away with this. Super turn of stifle.

3rd SIMJEST KIARA'S CANDY GIRL (DR S T & MR J E SMITH)

Good for size and shape, nice head, ears could be tighter for a better expression. Straight front
Has that slight forchest. Just needs to find the right speed to complicate her movement, she
Seemed to be rushing rather than striding out.

Open – Bitch Entries: 6 Abs: 0

1st FI/EE CH RATTUSTRAP TOP TOTTY JW SHCM HEW-13 FIW-13 (MISS E A, MR P N & MISS B SAXTON & DALE)
I have been in the same ring as this bitch on many occasions and have always thought that when standing she looks amazing. I have also seen her let herself down when moving, so it was a chance to see for myself. There must have been a lot of work gone into getting her ready , you could tell, not just a run around the garden, she was as hard as nails. Beautiful feminine outline, top quality head eye and ear, straight well set on front, well constructed with unbroken flowing lines. She moved around the ring with a purpose and I was more than happy to award her the CC.

2nd CH PAUCELIN ARMANA BY QUIXOL (MRS C & MRS C DUNFORD & AKRIGG)
An eye catching bitch with the most beautiful head, super eye with that special expression we look for, ears used at all times which does help in the show ring. Good length of neck with correct taper and crest, straight front, good depth of chest and a nice tuck up to complement. Could change places with first and her stable mate for the green cards on another day.

3rd CH TALANORS TAYLOR MADE TREAT (Mr C & Mrs G Knight)
I gave her the CC last time I judged. Very good for size, excellent in head, super eye and
complementing ear carriage. Long tapering neck into well laid shoulders good front assembly
and sound in construction, flowing lines with a lovely correct rise over the loin. Good tuck up
which gave her the elegance we look for in a Manchester. Could have put just a bit more spark
into her movement to complete the picture.

Good Citizen Dog Scheme – Bitch Entries: 4 Abs: 1

1st ERKENWYNE LADY GUINEVERE JW (MRS J L THURLOW)
Tip top condition were my first comments. She is good for size, and carries the air of elegance. Nice head which would look sharper if she got her ears up. Straight front, with enough depth of chest and complementing tuck up. Lovely rise over the loin and tailset. Moved much better in this class and seemed to have settled down.

2nd ROSETTIA RUBY REFLECTION (MRS V M L SHARPE)
Nice bitch really well handled. Another one who would benefit from getting her ears
working to advantage, lovely head with correct wedge shape from front and side, beautiful crest
of neck. Very good for size, of a different type and being more compact than first. Moved very
but perhaps if she were moved slightly quicker it would give her more drive from behind.

3rd RATTUSTRAP ROARING MEG AT HAAMBLET (MR N KEATES)
Well up to size, with really flowing lines and curves. Stood in the line up she had a good profile, great length of neck and straight front, good depth of chest. Just right for substance. Would have preferred a more positive movement with more rear drive.

Mick Oxley – Judge.
