MANCHESTER JUDGE PAIGNTON 12

Manchester Terriers

Not a big entry but on the whole I was pleased with the quality, I had a couple of difficult decisions to make having to compromise (as usual) between type, conformation & movement. Those who have seen me judge before should not have been surprised at the results; I have a very clear picture in my head of how I interpret the breed Standard & have never been shy over the years of voicing these opinions. I have always been lucky when judging because even in a mixed entry I have been able to find some decent Manchester’s for the top awards, today was no exception. I was spoilt for choice with the bitches, at least 5 of the entry are very good examples of the breed & in my opinion are good enough to get made up in current competition.

PD (0).

JD (1)

1 Clifton, Rosser & Roberts’ Gloryline Charles Brandon, good sized & well marked dog, decent make & shape good backend & tailset. Would like a better ear placement & he needs to settle on the move, when he does I would expect him to show off his good points a bit better than he was today.

PGD (2)

1 Carter’s Mansiya Witch’s Familiar at Afilador, well marked dog with a lot to like, a good coat & in excellent condition, wasn’t very settled today & although ears are well set he would not use them which summed up his attitude on the day, I think he would have been happier outside having a run. Just a touch long in the loin but is one of the few dogs around with well sprung ribs;

2 Williams’ Egoshayle Sea Lord, good sized dog with a good expression, well schooled & went reasonably well although I would like his hind movement to be more true. His markings are a bit smudgy but hopefully may clear a bit more, he is a touch short in loin which spoils his balance.

LD (4)

1 Clifton’s Gloryline Henry The Seventh, well balanced dog, in profile looks very nice being a good size & well marked, went well around the ring but front movement could be better coming & going, good wedge shaped head in profile but would prefer it to be a touch narrower in skull, I would also prefer a darker eye. He is well schooled & showed very well;

2 Eva’s Sophyla Sam Brown, well balanced with good markings & he is a good size, moved OK but I have seen him go better, this dog has a lot to like but unfortunately for me he is a bit weak in muzzle which spoils his head;

3 Mansiya Witch’s Familiar at A.

OD (3)

1 Norris’ Ch Brookstream Louis De Blue, CC, dog of excellent type, well marked, lovely head, the correct wedge, depth of muzzle & a good eye giving that Manchester expression, presented in great condition, I would prefer a better front with more positive movement which made it a very close decision between him & 2 but I had to go for type. I awarded him RCC last time I judged from puppy;

2 Morris’ Mansiya Word To The Wise at Calastoa, RCC, at the top of his form, never stopped showing, lovely straight front, well marked, excellent spring of rib, he is a bit proud with his tail. He ran the CC winner very close & it was my most difficult decision on the day but in the end I just preferred the head of 1;

3 Symington’s Quixol Havoc.

PB (2)

1 Norris’ Calastoa Who’s That Girl at Brookstream, BP, most promising puppy, cracking head with good depth of muzzle but still feminine, lovely ear placement & hopefully they will settle, beautiful expression, good size, she has a good shoulder placement which is so hard to find these days, went well for her handler she has a good attitude. For her age there is nothing much I would like to change, as she matures she will trouble the best in the show ring;

2 Greenslade’s Calastoa Material Girl, litter sister to the winner & another good example of a Manchester, the comments I made about first could also apply to this one but first was a touch more advanced in development & this one needs markings to clear a bit more but a very nice bitch.

JB (2)

1 Leigh’s Mansiya Sans Pareil, very raw youngster, of a good type, well marked with a good tan, good shaped head, she has all the essentials but obviously needs to learn how to show them off. This is a conformation competition not obedience so had no problem awarding her first in this class;

2 Price’s Wystry Artemis at Landover, well marked, too broad in skull & ears are set too low for me, she was shown too fat which made it difficult for me to assess her & affected her movement.

PGB (1)

1 Rosser & Roberts’ Gloryline Catherine Parr, a decent sort of bitch, well marked, good tailset, good coat, well balanced over all, not using her ears & eye could be better which spoils her expression for me.

LB (2)

1 Smith’s Calastoa Lady Of Meltham at Simjest, CC & BOB, lovely bitch with the classic outline, so balanced, the correct long, narrow skull but still with strength, correct wedge, good set ears which she uses giving you that Manchester expression, lovely crested neck flowing into well laid shoulders, looked a picture on the day being well schooled & shown to advantage. To be a touch critical I would like a darker tan with stronger markings & could be a touch stronger in pastern;

2 Steel’s Brookstream Blue Lady, RCC, another good bitch with a lot to like, good size & so well balanced, in profile I like her very much, she is a touch broad in back skull & her eye is a bit too light which spoils her expression & it was this which made the difference.

OB (2)

1 Leigh’s Calastoa English Rose to Mansiya, one is another top notch bitch full of type, correct head with the correct expression, good earset, good shoulder placement & lovely flowing lines, she is built correctly with a very good backend, similar to my CC winner who are litter sisters. Did not seem to like the hall & in the challenge would insist on spoiling her own outline, it has to be on the day so had to miss out this time but I am sure these bitches will have some fun changing places in the future.
