Border Terrier Not a large entry but no shortage of quality. All males were entire & the worst mouth fault I found was a few teeth out of line in one exhibit, & two or three with level mouths. I did, however, find a number of exhibits with short upper arms & steep shoulders – inevitably leading to an inability to stride long enough to allow any drive from the rear to be usefully employed. Bizarrely, several of these were – very skilfully – groomed to appear even more upright than they were, achieving an outline more correct for a Lakeland or Fox T than a Border. However, as I was judging to the Border Standard, essentially a working terrier… capable of following a horse, combining activity with gameness’ & not judging a grooming competition, I discounted such misguided practices, & concentrated on actual conformation & movement. A Border Terrier’s coat is for protection against the elements, not for adornment. MPD (8) 1 Rumsan’s Jenabeck Soloist, just 6 months, small neat dog in plenty of good quality coat, correct angulation, head promises strength, nice short tail, movement strong but needs to steady & mature; 2 Regan’s Digmoor Ace’s High, 8 months, bigger & more mature than 1, more upstanding, moving OK; 3 Norris’ Brookbank Could Be Magic. PD (5) 1 Jenkins’ Badgerbeck Bobby Owl, strong upstanding b/t pup, 10 months, strong head, quality well managed coat, in excellent condition, well muscled & well schooled. BPD; 2 Dickinson’s Blackmine Rossington to Badgerholme, well proportioned, sound moving dog. Unfortunately coatless today; 3 Iddon’s Murphs Rutland Rascal. JD (5) 1 Guvercin’s Glebeheath Johnny The One, strong, upstanding dog with good length of back & well angulated hindquarters, shown fit & in good, dense coat & good pelt; 2 Baird’s Dowgri Daredevil, smaller, neater type, shorter in back, moving well though rather enthusiastically; 3 Vasey’s Ruelata Boulder. PGD (10) 1 Peacock’s Ragatam Harris, good head, excellent coat & pelt, correct angulation, movement OK but needs to steady up in front, good for size & balance; 2 Anscombe’s Tufterslodge Walnut, neat, well balanced little dog, moving soundly both ways & driving out well. Short of coat on the day & couldn’t match 1 for head; 3 Jackson’s Clipstone Tailor. LD (10,1a) 1 Girling’s Benattivo Rock Robin, smart, well balanced gr/t dog, moving soundly both ways but could not match OD for front movement in the challenge; 2 Harrison’s Iacheslei Torus, more solidly made, angulated well both ends & moving OK, well presented in good coat; 3 Barnett’s Brockfox Buckshot. OD (8,1) 1 Reeves’ Baywillow Racing Blue, well proportioned & balanced body lines with properly angulated shoulder, ribs carried well back, good hindquarters, strong head & jaw, coat excellent for quality & depth, moved soundly. CC on overall balance, maturity & movement; 2 Dean’s Ch Stineval Acerola with Tyrian, a quality dog, shorter in body & less convincing in front than 1. In fit condition, good quality, well presented coat, sound mover. RCC; 3 Hollingsbee’s Ch Otterwood Amex. MPB (8,2) 1 Stockley’s Jenabeck Rose over Foxthorn, just 6 months, litter sister to first in MPD, neatly made, well angulated, moved soundly & very steadily for one so young, good head, would like to see this one again in a few months as she was shown short of coat today; 2 Newsome’s Kighill Ellie Ellie, 12 months bitch, bigger & more mature than 1, plenty of coat here, of good quality, well balanced angulations. Would like to see steadier front movement, hope she doesn’t grow on; 3 Wilson’s Lorrivale Lerryn of Olderhill. PB (11,2) Very hard to split 1 & 2 – two high class, promising puppies of different types, could change places another day. 1 Stockley’s Rhozzum Keynote with Foxfactor, b/t bitch, lots of scope, well laid shoulder, good rear angulation, ribs carried well back & strong loin, good head, moving well, coat harsh & dense though not as tidy as some. BP; 2 Hibberd’s Speck Of Gold Dust at Biddestone, smaller, more compact type, good head & expression with the best ears of the day, well constructed throughout, moved perfectly both ways with drive, good coat; 3 Dean’s Yeomeadow Heather for Tyrian. J B (5,1) 1 Roslin-Williams’ Mansergh Ditty, small, well constructed & balanced b/t bitch, easily the best mover in the class, sound & positive both ways & driving powerfully, coat & pelt could not be faulted, lots of both & quality too, was close up in the challenge & should further improve with maturity. RCC; 2 Morgan’s Glebeheath Minnie The Motor at Blewecourt, larger, more mature looking upstanding bitch, good coat, well presented & handled, up to size; 3 Scott & Griffiths’ Clipstone Terra. PGB (12,1) 1 Pickering’s Picer Polyanthus, nice sized b/t bitch, showing a good balanced outline with pleasing rear angulation. Perhaps a shade narrow in front. Moved accurately both ends, in good coat & condition, strong & typical head; 2 Peacock’s Mickleheath Crystal by Ragatam, a well balanced bitch, straight front, moved OK, good coat & pelt, pleasingly short tail; 3 Parsons’ Kyscafter Nimue. LB (12,4) 1 Barnett’s Brockfox Beretta, cracking bitch, well laid shoulder, good rib carried well back, strong loin & correct hindquarters, overall a well balanced outline, moved accurately & with drive, occasionally letting her exuberance overcome her discipline. Very pleasing head & expression, in full coat of good quality & depth, nice shaped tail. CC & BOB; 2 Harris’ Penlumeg Pendant, ideal proportions, competent movement, no exaggerations, showing understated quality in all departments, quality coat in good condition, a proper, no-nonsense, real Border T; 3 Jenkins’ Badgerbeck Purdi. OB (7,2) Only five bitches present, five different types but all worth a place in this, or any other class. 1 Newsome’s Kighill Millymoo, well laid shoulder, rib carried well back, strong loin, well constructed hindquarters, all the right ingredients for quality movement & did not disappoint, an excellent mover from both ends & particularly in profile, strong skull, good coat; 2 Hollingsbee’s Otterwood Ilex, better for size, well made, well balanced & moving accurately but without conviction, good head & expression, quality well presented coat; 3 Jenkins’ Badgerbeck Fantacy.
