Welsh Kennel Club 2008 BORDER JUDGE WELSH KC 08
I’ve not been to Builth since 16 years to the day when I made up my own dog so this was a trip down memory lane for me. I was pleased with both line-ups & the good number of correctly sized, clean & tidy exhibits. Small feet & decent pelts were in the majority but we seem to have all but lost the short carroty tail & a few in both sexes were too light in bone. Mouths were OK in all but two cases. Placings were affected in some cases by exhibits being sadly lacking in muscletone. The catalogue made an interesting read that evening as I’m so rarely at shows that virtually all the dogs were brand new to me. When I came into the breed in the late 1980s the blue & tans weren’t popular since their coats were often soft, lacked ticking & were considered difficult to keep so I was pleased with those in today’s entry proving how some things do improve with many of the best jackets here being b/t. MPD (6,1a) 1 Jenkins’ Badgerbeck Felix, neat fronted, moved out well, large well set teeth, good jacket & depth of undercoat; 2 Rumsam’s Jenabeck Soloist, similar handy size to 1, good breadth of skull, neat feet & good bone, well angulated, coat past its best; 3 Norris’ Brookbank Could It Be Magic. PD (7,1) 1 Davis’ Hesslemere Hi Karate, well balanced b/t with harsh well ticked jacket, good overall type, narrow straight front, masculine head with good breadth of skull, short strong muzzle & large teeth. BPD; 2 Jenkins’ Badgerbeck Bobby Owl, attractive b/t with hard bitten expression, good topline & tailset, in excellent condition with good muscletone & racy hindquarters. Preferred the handier size of 1; 3 Irving’s Dandyhow Masterpiece. JD (7,1) 1 Guvercin’s Glebeheath Johnny The One, stylish & eyecatching with a lovely head & good reach of neck flowing into well laid shoulder, easily spanned, narrow & rangy throughout ending with a carrot tail, he was a strong contender for the RCC but his coat had gone over which cost dear; 2 Dean’s Cedarhill Authorised, keen dark eye & neat ear, well balanced & moving soundly, just right for bone, well presented tight jacket on thick pelt; 3 Irving’s Dandyhow Royal Oak. ND (4,2) 1 B Bobby Owl; 2 Dickinson’s Blackmine Rossington, 4th in PD, narrow & easily spanned with neat straight front & good angulation. Needing a new jacket. GD (4) 1 C Authorised; 2 Morgan’s Badgerbeck Festive Spirit at Blewecourt, narrow in body with racy hindquarters, moved well & presented in dense harsh coat. Preferred the front of 1; 3 Dickinson’s Blackmine Rossington. PGD (6,1) 1 Evans’ Jenabeck Cie Coch of Nogard, an eyecatching rich red in hard condition & on his toes throughout, strong head with powerful jaw & mouthful of huge teeth, flat rib easily spanned, short carrot shaped tail, moved soundly; 2 Thomas’ Byrons Greengrass, liked this one a lot & he pushed 1 very hard. He is balanced came to hand well & was easily spanned, nice head with dark eye, stood on good legs with neat feet & thick pads, fit & well presented in good coat. A nice dog, just preferred the over masculinity of 1; 3 Johnson & Williams’ Quarryway Dill. LD (6,1) 1 Harrison’s Iacheslei Torus, ottery head & well placed eye, scored high on quality & type, he is not overdone anywhere but is in balance with good front angulation & well turned stifle, handy size with correct body proportions & sensible bone, comes well to hand, is easily spanned & ribbed well back. Fit, in nicely presented tweedy coat & moving out soundly with plenty of drive & reach. CC; 2 Stockley’s Foxfactor Hornblower, a taller dog with lovely eye & expression & strength of jaw. In super jacket with dense undercoat, well angulated with good topline & tailset; 3 Girling’s Benattivo Rock Robin. OD (12,4) 1 Aubrey’s Dockens Augustus at Jenabeck, very fit & shouts game & active, gave him a class as a youngster & just can’t ignore him for Border type & his all male head, neat ears, strong jaw & big white well set teeth, has an excellent coarse dense topcoat with good undercoat on thick pliant pelt, is spannable & looks as if he’d go all day. RCC; 2 Greenhill’s Irton Starship in Aurdu, upstanding narrow dog, liked his head properties with very little stop & keen expression, in good condition & moved well to his place; 3 Sharp’s Rhozzum Dankworth. MPB (8,1) 1 Furness’s Tallowbrook Memento of Quatford, confident b/t in harsh well ticked jacket, lovely head with a short strong muzzle & dark eye, straight narrow front & stood on four good feet, one of the best tails today. BP; 2 Shaw’s Early Valentine, pretty head, good bodylines & ribbed well back, well presented in jacket just past best. Preferred the turn of stifle & tail of 1; 3 Stockley’s Jenabeck Rose over Foxfactor. PB (11,2) 1 Davis’ Hesslemere Miss Lemon, litter sister to BPD & also has an attractive head, good flow of neck into well laid shoulder with balanced rear angulation, came easily to hand, moved out well; 2 Small’s Badgerbeck Tree Pipit at Tilmoray, very good b/t coat on this puppy, liked her for size, had a well shaped head with strong bite & moved soundly. Just pipped by the thicker pelt of 1; 3 Stockley’s Rhozzum Keynote with Foxfactor. JB (10,3) 1 Morgan’s Glebeheath Minnie The Motor at Blewecourt, typy, lovely head with moderately broad skull, strong muzzle & alert expression, good neck & shoulders, easily spanned with narrow body & well toned rearend; 2 Yates’ Pherjan Phoebe, balanced & handy sized, good head proportions, well bent stifle enabling good rear drive, excellent carroty tail, outshone by 1; 3 Hibberd’s Speck Of Gold Dust at Biddestone. NB (5) 1 H Miss Lemon; 2 Norris’ Cast A Spell over Brookbank, sound moving, neat front, in good coat, small well padded feet; 3 Evans’ Kenmilleven Bali Waters. GB (4,3) 1 Pickering’s Picer Polyanthus, handy sized fit & easily spanned b/t, nicely proportioned head with short strong muzzle & kind expression, well off for bone & strode out with ease. A pity she stood alone, but worthy of her place in the line-up. PGB (10,1) 1 Harris’ Penlumeg Pendant, right for size, well balanced & in good condition, keen expression & good earset, went well both ways; 2 Maskell’s Sextonmagic Bluebell, narrow & rangy b/t up a size from 1. Good breadth of skull, booked 2nd with her fabulous weatherproof coat with the harshest & deepest well ticked topcoat over a dense undercoat & thick pelt; 3 Johnson & Williams’ Quarryway Sorrel. LB (15,2) Hotly contested class with first three all worthy of going higher. 1 Jenkins’ Badgerbeck Purdi, a real showgirl who instantly grabs attention, fit & on tiptoe of expectation the whole time, good rib easily spanned, narrow throughout with racy hindquarters & going well, flat skull, keenest eye & strong jaw, seriously considered in the challenge; 2 Harrison’s Iacheslei Montanus, litter sister to DCC winner & similar remarks apply, well balanced with good rib & excellent turn of stifle, good head, neck & topline, & short carrot shaped tail completed the picture. Not putting as much in as 1. Her handier size just gave the edge over the quality 3rd placed bitch; 3 Nicholls’ Baywillow Maid With Spice for Halcus. OB (8,1) 1 Jenkins’ Baywillow Blue Bouquet for Badgerbeck, handy sized workmanlike yet feminine bitch with ottery head, strong teeth, neat ears & good eye placement, shapely easily spanned body with good angulation either end so moved steadily & soundly, hard b/t jacket, fit & looked the part. CC & BOB, I heard this made her up; 2 Reeves’ Baywillow Tarte Tatin, a pretty headed bitch who I couldn’t get past for her femininity & typical outline, a class act she is narrow with a lovely topline & tailset, moved well, in good coat & condition, later found to be litter sister to 1. RCC: 3 Hollingsbee’s Otterwood Ilex. LYNDA WARD |
